Abe-no-Seimei was a Onmyou master of the mid-Heian period, born in Engi 21 (921) and died in Kanpō 2 (1005). He studied Onmyou Dou under Kamo Yasunori and was taught the Way of Astronomy. Then at the age of 51, he was appointed Doctor of Astronomy, and subsequently gained the trust of the Emperor and Fujiwara-no-Michinaga. The birth of Abe-no-Seimei is particularly enigmatic, and several traditions have been handed down throughout Japan. One of them is the name of a specific place called "Nekoshima" in present-day Chikusei City as the birthplace of Seimei, which appears in the "Hokisyou" (author and date of establishment are the subject of various theories), which is said to be a commentary on Onmyou Dou, and reads as follows. ...said to be a native of Nekojima at the foot of Mt.Tsukuba, in the land of his birth. However, there is no firm basis for this story, and only the famous words Seimei Boat Willow, Seimei Bridge and Seimei Mound, that remain on Nekojima support this legend. Why Nekoshima? At present, it is truly difficult to find a clue to this question, which deepens the mystery of the legend of Seimei’s birth even further.
